The students are working hard to program and run Earle B. Wood's latest technology: Scribbler Robots!

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Earle B. Wood Middle School has formed a partnership with Net Generation Youth, an organization that brings a voice to youth. The students involved in the program act as cyberambassadors; they research and discuss 21st century problems and use technology as their mode of communication via blogs and film. On December 17, 2009, two students and teachers from Wood went to The Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C. to listen to Alec Ross, Senior Advisor for Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, speak. Alec Ross’s speech, “U.S. Diplomacy in the Age of Facebook an Twitter: An Address on 21st Century Statecraft,” was eye-opening and informative. The students were able to interview participants and report their findings to fellow students at Wood.

November 19 Meeting

Agenda: Create a device that will better the life of a person with a handicap

Responses from middle school students:

"I created a device where you put one part of your waist and you put the other two parts in your shoes. Whenever the person steps, radio waves are sent out and bounce back to tell the person if there is anything near them. This is mostly for blind people or people can't see very well. It is nice to make this and to think that one day it can be used."

"I created a car for people for are paraplegic. They will need a car to help them move around."

"I created a dvice for blind people. There is an energy box that contains energy for the color sensors, which convert color into vision."

"I created a robotic leg for the paraplegic. It has three joints and one rotator. It has three clasps and a back reinforcer. Helping people with handicaps makes me feel like I can accomplish something with my life. I feel like I could do more things."

"When creating something that can help people with handicaps, I feel that I could do something that helped people. I feel proud of myself."
